Fall / Winter 2012-2013 School Year
FALL / WINTER Parent - Teacher Conferences are scheduled for next week on December 6 & 7. Please watch for information coming home this week or call your student's teacher to schedule a conference now.
This has been a busy school year and I am enjoying my first year with 8th graders! We are getting used to each other and together we are exploring and learning about the Properties of Matter Unit. We were joined this fall by Mr. Halliday a Masters of Education student at Grand Canyon University. Mr. Halliday is completing his teaching internship and has a great job of supporting and instructing our students.
We have one of our big environmental community events coming up on Martin Luther King Jr. Day - January 21st. We will start our morning at school and then take a bus to our work site along the rim of First Creek. After a couple of hours of restoration work, we will return to the school to enjoy a light lunch. For my science students and Science Club members this is a required activity. However, I encourage students to bring a parent, guardian, or older sibling along. Dr. King believed in the power of common people to make a difference in the community. By cleaning up the areas in and around First Creek we are preventing polluted water from reaching the Puget Sound. I hope some of our parents will join us on MLK Day. We will partner with UWT, The Green Tacoma Partnership, and Salishan for this event. Watch this spot for information on how to register to participate.
A final reminder. As an AVID school EVERY student is expected to have a 3 inch white binder and appropriate supplies in class EVERYDAY. Many students understand and comply with this requirement but some are struggling. Students were provided the first binder and materials free of charge at the beginning of the year. Additional materials may be purchased at a very reduced price if needed but it is the student's responsibility to arrive in class EVERYDAY with the tools they need to learn - binder, paper, pencils, pens, color pencils, and erasers. Please help your student come to class prepared to learn. Students who make it to class without required materiasl are a disruption to the learning process as we must scramble to find them paper, pencils, pens, etc. Your support is appreciated.
Respectfully and With Gratitude,
Students remember to come to class everyday prepared to learn!
